SUMMARY:2016 Latinx Theatre Commons Pacific Northwest Regional
DESCRIPTION:Watch the livestreamed opening ceremonies here \nSeattle\, Washington\, 15-17 April 2016\nThe 2016 Latinx Theatre Commons Pacific Northwest Regional convening brought together over eighty Latinx and allied theatremakers to the Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theatre\, University of Washington School of Drama in Seattle\, Washington to engage in a national dialogue on the building a Latinx Theatre movement in the Pacific Northwest. See the full list of attendees and check out the agenda here. This convening was the second in a series of regional convenings produced by the LTC Steering Committee and hosted by local partners\, for local artists\, closely following the regional convening in Dallas\, Texas in 2015. \n“LTC participants are founding initiatives\, reaching out\, launching books—all activities they might have done anyway—but it all has this espírito. They aren’t doing these activities solely for themselves. They are part of a larger history; they are buoyed by each other.”—Elaine Ávila \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the left\, theatre artists mingle in a black box theater. On the right\, a person takes notes on a large sheet of paper on a wall.\nThe 2016 Latinx Theatre Commons Pacific Northwest Regional began with a session reflecting on the history of Latinx theatre in the Pacific Northwest and celebrating the legacy of Maria Irene Fornés with selected readings of scenes from her works performed and directed by local artists. Following this\, we heard from Todd London\, Executive Director of the UW School of Drama\, and the Office of the Mayor of Seattle\, as they proclaimed April 15 as Latina/o Theatre Day. The convening continued for two more days\, building and growing relationships among theatremakers in the Pacific Northwest and connecting them with a national movement of Latinx theatremakers organizing together. The convening ended with a closed session for theatremakers from the Pacific Northwest where they charted a path forward\, with an emphasis on maintaining connections and furthering artistic partnerships. \n“While we had the opportunity to express the many challenges faced by Latina/o artists in this region\, the conversation ended on acknowledging the power of our shared history and creating opportunities to move the work forward.”—Arlene Martínez-Vázquez \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead Related HowlRound Content \n\nWRITINGS FROM THE CONVENING

DESCRIPTION:Watch video from the convening here \nChicago\, Illinois 23-25 July 2015\nThe Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC)’s 2015 Carnaval of New Latinx Work was produced in association with Teatro Vista and the Alliance of Latinx Theatre Artists of Chicago (ALTA)\, and hosted by The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago\, Illinois and brought together over 200 Latinx and allied theatremakers from across the country and the globe and featured readings of twelve new plays by Latinx writers directed by Latinx directors. \n“I want to write plays that are in a constant state of motion: music playing\, voices overlapping\, and bodies that can’t stop dancing\, which to me is the same as dreaming.”—Virginia Grise \nCheck out the full list of featured artists in our press release from 13 April 2015\, and see the full program here. The 2015 Carnaval featured the following plays: \n\nParachute Men by Mando Alvarado\nSatyricoño by Migdalia Cruz\nSweep by Georgina Escobar\nAPPEAL – A New American Musical of Mexican Descent by Amparo Garcia Crow\nPerfectamente Loca/Perfectly Insane by Magdalena Gómez\nSiempre Norteada: Always Late\, Always Lost by Virginia Grise\nthe living’life of the daughter mira by Matthew Paul Olmos\nWolf at the Door by Marisela Treviño Orta\nMás by Milta Ortiz\nThe Sweetheart Deal by Diane Rodriguez\nSwimming While Drowning by Emilio Rodriguez\nMother Road by Octavio Solis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead reflections on the convening \n\nCollected articles on 2015 Carnaval\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring preparations for Carnaval 2015\, the LTC put out a call to Latinx theatres across the nation to secure productions for the 12 Carnaval selected Playwrights\, and in less than 13 hours\, 18 responded! This enthusiasm created El Fuego Initiative\, which sought to both chronicle and critically position new Latinx theatremaking in the scholarly and public discourses of US American theatre by providing production support for these Latinx plays at Latinx theatres\, as well as attaching a scholar to each production to document the process and the impact.. You can read more about these productions in the Ignited series on HowlRound. \n“It is a reminder of the in-betweeness of it all. Cultures\, voices\, people\, stories brought together by one main unifying theme that rests on the fact that ‘between cultures’ makes a culture.”—Georgina Escobar

SUMMARY:2014 LTC National Convening at Encuentro 2014
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles\, California 6-10 November 2014\nThe Latino Theater Company\, in association with the Latina/o (later renamed Latinx) Theatre Commons\, presented the 2014 LATC Encuentro: A National Latina/o Theatre Festival\, from October 12 to November 10\, 2014. Encuentro translates to “an encounter\,” a theme that was a core component of this groundbreaking festival\, which was also the largest national Latinx theatre festival in over twenty-five years. The Encuentro explored the multi-faceted Latinx experience on stage by featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning plays\, English- and Spanish-language productions\, devised theatre\, experimental work\, ensemble-based performances\, and solo shows. In addition to presenting their work to the public\, artists worked together during the month-long residency by sharing creative methodologies in artistic workshops that culminated in a public performance of the co-created new works. See the full list of participants\, the convening viewing schedule (including performances conveners saw)\, and the convening event schedule. \n“As practitioners that tell culturally specific narratives\, and as producers that create space for culturally specific work\, do we work to tell our stories from within regional theater or do we work to support and create more culturally specific institutions to present our work?” — Arielle Julia Brown \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead reports from the convening and NewCrit reviews of the festival performances. \n\nHOWLROUND ARTICLE\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“We are here to cherish our accomplishments and to consider our missteps. We are here to converge and to communicate our thoughts and ideas for the future. We are here full of optimism\, full of rage\, full of pain\, full of love\, and joy. We are here to look forward\, to move forward\, we are here to encounter ourselves\, our audiences\, and each other.” — José Luis Valenzuela \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the final weekend of the festival\, the LTC Steering Committee gathered in Los Angeles for the 2014 LTC Second National Convening to attend the performances\, engage in discussions about art-making and aesthetics\, and attend an in-person LTC Steering Committee meeting. Through these five days of convening\, the LTC Steering Committee sought an answer to the core question of the Encuentro itself: What is the state of Latina/o Theatre today?

SUMMARY:Latinx Theatre Commons Steering Committee Convening
DESCRIPTION:Boston\, Massachusetts\, 22-23 March 2013\nThe first gathering of the newly formed Latinx Theatre Commons Steering Committee took place 22–23 March 2013. Born out of a meeting in Washington\, DC the previous year\, this committee met with the express purpose to plan a national convening of 70-90 Latinx theatre artists in the fall of 2013. That national gathering would officially launch the Latinx Theatre Commons\, a national movement that uses a commons-based approach to transform the narrative of the American theatre\, to amplify the visibility of Latinx performance making\, and to champion equity through advocacy\, art making\, convening\, and scholarship. \n“Latino/a” “highlights the globalization of the US Latino/a community and mirrors the fact that life in the US is now an intercultural reality.” —Anne Garcia-Romero \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead about the very first gathering \n\nLATINX THEATRE COMMONS: UPDATING THE US NARRATIVE\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe group that gathered included: Christopher Acebo\, Kevin Becerra\, Juliette Carrillo\, Anne García-Romero\, Tlaloc Rivas\, Tanya Saracho\, Tony Sonero\, Enrique Urueta\, Kinan Valdez\, Clyde Valentín\, José Luis Valenzuela\, Patricia Ybarra\, and Karen ZacarÍas \nThis planning session started with the articulated goal of creating a concrete plan and action steps for moving forward with the Latinx Theatre Commons national gathering in the Fall of 2013\, including: confirmed dates for the event\, a list of invitees\, an outreach plan\, a fundraising action plan\, and a basic design for the event itself. The conversation was rooted in a desire to be inclusive of all efforts to advance Latinx theatre around the country\, whether or not the champions and artists are specifically tied to this steering committee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn about what happened next \n\n2013 LTC National Convening\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNotes from this meeting

SUMMARY:2012 Latinx Theatre Artists
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC\, 18 May 2012\nIn 2012\, eight Latinx theatremakers gathered in Washington\, DC at the invitation of Karen Zacarías\, then playwright in residence at the American Voices New Play Institute at Arena Stage (the precursor to HowlRound) with the intention of discussing the opportunities and challenges facing Latinx theatremakers and Latinx Theatre in the American theatre field\, filling a gap of lost industry-wide affinity space. The group sought an opportunity to update and expand the narrative of the American theatre. Over the course of a day and a half the group identified several shared aims and set the intention to form what would become the Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC): \n\nTo seek the recognition of a canon of Latinx plays and create an ongoing venue for conversation in person and online among Latinx theatremakers\nTo establish new incubators of multilingual and multi-ethnic environments to facilitate conversations and sharing among Latinx theatremakers\nOver the course of the next year\, establish a 15-20 person Steering Committee to plan and execute a larger convening in 2013\, to be hosted by HowlRound Theatre Commons at Emerson College.\n\n“How do we get more authentic work by a diversity of Latinos onto our stages? How can we support each other in taking risks?”—Karen Zacarías \nParticipants included (all affiliations listed are as of 2012): \n\nKristoffer Diaz (Playwright\, New York NY)\nAnne García-Romero (Playwright; Assistant Professor of Theater\, University of Notre Dame\, South Bend\, IN)\nLisa Portes (Director; Professor of Theater\, DePaul University\, Chicago\, IL)\nTlaloc Rivas (Director; Assistant Professor of Theatre\, The University of Iowa\, Iowa City\, IA)\nAntonio Sonera (Director\, Portland OR)\nEnrique Urueta (Playwright\, Minneapolis\, MN)\nJose Luis Valenzuela (Artistic Director\, Latino Theater Company\, Los Angeles\, CA)\nKaren Zacarías (Resident Playwright\, Arena Stage\, Washington\, DC)\n\nThis gathering led directly to the creation of the LTC. You can read more about the origins of the LTC in Anne García-Romero’s 2012 essay here.
