Our History
A Movement that Began With a Gathering
The Latinx Theatre Commons began with a gathering of artists committed to a more connected, equitable future. Today, that gathering continues through a growing community built on shared knowledge, collective leadership, and care.
Where We Begin
In 2012, a group of Latinx/e theatremakers and scholars came together in Washington, D.C. They weren’t trying to create another arts institution. They were imagining a grassroots movement where artists could build collective agency within their own communities and, together, expand the narrative of US theatre. The question was how to organize around it not through hierarchy or competition, but through collaboration, shared leadership, and collective responsibility.
That answer became the Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC).
From the beginning, LTC chose a different model. Not a nonprofit with a board and a director, but a commons: a community of people taking collective responsibility for the future of Latinx/e theatre in the United States.
How We Work
FOUR PILLARS | Building a More Connected Theatre Community
Convening/ Gathering
Over more than a decade, LTC has produced fifteen convenings, and counting, around the United States. These gatherings have sparked artistic collaborations, professional relationships, and national productions that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.
Advocacy
From position papers to public coalitions, LTC has consistently raised its voice for Latinx/e theatremakers and the communities they serve including allyship with the Sol Project, the Latinx Playwrights Circle, and other community-based theatremakers. LTC will continue to raise their voices on behalf of the Latinx/e community throughout theatre and beyond.
Scholarship
LTC has advanced Latinx/e theatre scholarship through symposia, publications, and a growing archive of documented practice. LTC believes that naming and chronicling this history is itself an act of advocacy.
Art-Making
Through workshops, spotlights, and Colaboratorios, LTC has strengthened the craft and visibility of Latinx/e artists across the United States supporting the aesthetic work that makes this movement real.
