Diane Rodriguez Teatrista Award
The Diane
Inspired by the legacy of Diane Rodriguez, this award honors artists and leaders who open doors, lift others, and champion a thriving future for Latinx/e theatre.

The Woman Behind the Award.
(1951–2020)
Diane Rodriguez
Diane Rodriguez was a theatre artist, advocate, and door-opener. Over the course of her career as an actor, director, playwright, and arts leader; she fought tirelessly for Latinx/e artists and pushed theatre in the United States to be more just, more generous, and more honest about who belonged on its stages.
She was a founding member of Latins Anonymous, a longtime collaborator with Culture Clash, a creator of her own plays, and for over a decade a leader at Center Theatre Group, where she served as associate artistic director. She was also a member of the LTC’s Advisory Committee for six years—lending her expertise, her network, and her belief in this community to the work we do together.
When she passed in 2020, American theatre lost one of its great champions. This award carries her name forward.
The Diane is a recognition from the community, for the community.
I think that humor is the biggest weapon to change people’s minds.
- Diane Rodriguez, in conversation with the National Endowment for the Arts, 2018
